In 2012, my journey into collecting playing cards began. This fascination took root during a card game that required merging decks, making each player's set distinct upon sorting. Motivated by a quest for the most unique designs, I stumbled upon 'The Art of Play' at an art and design convention in Los Angeles—fulfilling my desire for truly exceptional card aesthetics.
Craft a deck of cards showcasing design styles I admire, with the vision that it might one day be printed and become a prized addition to my collection.
Selecting the style and era posed the greatest challenge. Despite my profound appreciation for mid-century modern aesthetics, I deemed a representation of my childhood most appropriate.
The 80s and 90s encompassed various influential styles, but the Memphis Design movement particularly stood out, leaving its mark on furniture, product, graphic, fashion, and interior design. Memphis blends elements of art deco and pop art, offering a nod to Bauhaus (especially evident in graphic design), through its bold use of geometric shapes and vibrant colors.
